Our first architecture club was organized as a 3-week summer camp for ages 10-13, one week each in June, July & August. However, the topics & projects below can easily suit an adult schedule, aptitude, and level of exploration.
Week 1: What’s that building made of?
- DAY 1. Introduction to building materials
- Day 2. Buildings you can make yourself
- Day 3. Masonry: it is structure AND shelter, & it can last forever
- Day 4. Building with sticks & wood
- Day 5. How heavy is it? Build-ability and materials transport
Week 2 Why did they build it there?
- Day 1. Introduction to cities & towns
- Day 2. Transportation
- Day 3. Site — situating a building on the land
- Day 4. Big buildings & small buildings
- Day 5. Orientation
Week 3: Why did they build it that way?
- Day 1. Outdoors & Indoors
- Day 2. Creating a vision, telling a story
- Day 3. Design principles
- Day 4. Making a space of your own
- Day 5. Building codes; and, the importance of decorating
